“I am inspired by human resiliency and each person’s path toward fullness. I am a holistic healer, helping to connect the mind, body and spirit of queer and trans* folks working through trauma, and everyone I am blessed to work with and accompany on the healing path. I believe that everyone has a potential to be realized, that everyone has a right to know their own strength, and that everyone has what they need already to fully inhabit their lives.”
My areas of interest:
Addiction and Recovery
Self-Care and Sustainability, especially for folks in social justice/social movement/social service work
Embodiment, holistic wellness
Trauma healing and recovery
Queer and Trans* Mental Health
Mindfulness
Patricia (Patty) Adams is a Masters in Social Work intern with the GSDS Initiative and a candidate for a Masters in Social Work from North Carolina State University in May 2016. Patty has been working for nearly 20 years in communities throughout the Americas in solidarity with their efforts to transform their trauma and their social realities. Through years of frontline social justice and social movement work, Patty experienced first hand the impacts of institutional oppression, the cycle of violence, and unresolved trauma. These experiences inspired her to develop more tools to offer individuals and communities who are struggling with those impacts too. This includes training in yoga, Thai yoga therapy, nonviolent communication, and Ayurvedic medicine. Patty has been honored to share the spirit and practice of yoga with incarcerated gang members in El Salvador; women survivors of violence in Nicaragua; yoga lovers in Bogotá, Colombia; queer folks in Durham, Greensboro and beyond; and healing artists, advocates/activists/organizers/rebels/revolutionaries and cultural workers the world over. Patty offers community-minded, donation-based and sliding scale healing arts workshops and services in Durham and beyond. She is best known as the founder/organizer of Yoga for Queers and Misfits, a donation-based yoga class founded in October 2010 to serve the queer, gender non-conforming and otherwise ‘othered’ communities in Durham and beyond.
