What is TMS Therapy?

NeuroStar TMS Therapy:

  • Is an FDA cleared non-drug treatment for adults suffering from depression.
  • Uses a highly focused pulsed magnetic field to stimulate nerve cells in the areas in  the brain that are thought to control mood. It is the only TMS system cleared by the FDA for the treatment of patients with major depression when initial antidepressant medication fails.
  • Is non-invasive
  • Does not require anesthesia or sedation
  • Is an outpatient procedure performed in an office
  • Is a 37-minute daily procedure (3000 pulses) over a 6 week treatment course

Does TMS Therapy Work?

The most recent clinical information from the Neuronetics Treatment Utilization and Outcomes Study showed a 58% response rate for TMS therapy clients.  Electro Convulsive Therapy, the other leading treatment for treatment/medication-resistant depression
has a 60-80% success rate, but has been found to have major side-effects in some cases, including dementia and memory loss, and requires anesthesia during treatments. Many doctors are now turning to TMS therapy first.  See below an excerpt from the TMS Center of Princeton Website explaining ECT versus TMS:

NeuroStar TMS Therapy is an outpatient procedure. Unlike electroconvulsive therapy, TMS does not require anesthesia, sedation and the production of a convulsion. Also different from ECT, NeuroStar TMS Therapy does not result in adverse effects on memory or concentration. Because of these issues, ECT is often reserved as a last resort.

TMS will likely be used much earlier in the treatment algorithm, because of its favorable risk/benefit ratio.

How Do I Schedule A Consultation?

If you'd like to meet with one of our TMS Doctors to learn more about TMS therapy, and to determine if the therapy is right for you, please call our TMS coordinator, Dana Weatherford, at 919-354-0862.

Is TMS Therapy Covered by My Insurance?

Most insurance companies will cover the initial consult with a TMS Doctor.  We encourage you to check with your carrier prior to the session, however.  Most insurance plans will not cover the actual TMS therapy treatments.  We are happy to file to your insurance plan, however, and work on your behalf to the best of our ability to get your claims paid.  Immediately following your consultation with the TMS Doctor, our TMS Coordinator, Dana Weatherford, will discuss our 0% financing options with you.
